Do you know the story of Patricia Bath aka the First of First of First?⁣

Patricia Bath was born with such a high level of ingenuity & intellect that she completed a Hat Trick of First. She was the first Black person to become an ophthalmologist, the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent, and she invented a revolutionary laser eye surgery device to treat cataracts known as the Laserphaco Probe. SHEESH!

Queen Bath was born in 1942 in Harlem and was the daughter of Rupert Bath, the first Black motorman for the New York City subway system. Patricia was always encouraged by her parents to Dream BIG. Her father taught her about the wonders of travel and the value of exploring new cultures, while her mother cultivated her love of the sciences.

At the age of 16 Patricia became one of only a few students invited to attend a cancer research workshop sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The program head, Dr. Robert Bernard, was so impressed with Bath's discoveries during the project that he incorporated her findings into a scientific paper he presented at a conference. The publicity surrounding her discoveries earned Bath the Mademoiselle magazine's Merit Award in 1960.

16 years of age and published in scientific journals… that fragrance you smell is BOSS!

If that wasn’t enough, Patricia decided she was cool on High School, turned on her genius, and graduated in just 2 years! Bath would go on to get her Bachelors degree from Hunter college before matriculating on to Howard University for medical school.

In 1973 Bath became the first Black ophthalmologist and in 1975 she became the first female faculty member in the Department of Ophthalmology at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute. And she wasn’t done yet. In 1976 Bath co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. My lord THIS WOMAN WAS SPECIAL!

Just when you thought that was it, Bath said hold my beer. In 1988 she became the first Black female doctor to receive a medical patent after she invented the Laserphaco Probe. A medical device so amazing that Bath was able to help restore the sight of individuals who had been blind for more than 30 years.

They say some people are just built different. But if those people are different, then Patricia Bath is from another planet. Her genius, her ingenuity and her fearlesness will forever serve as an inspiration for young girls & boys who dare to dream, defy the status quo, and embrace ADVENTURE!⁣
